Speech Given at Time Capsule Ceremony
Biography:
Austin J. Tylec is a lifelong resident of North Tonawanda and a graduate of the University at Buffalo, where he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Architecture. Prior to serving as Mayor, he worked for a Western New York architecture, engineering, and planning firm beginning in 2014, with much of his professional work focused on municipal projects, community planning, and public infrastructure.
Mayor Tylec began his public service as an Alderman-at-Large on the North Tonawanda Common Council, serving from 2018 through 2021. During his time on the Council, he advocated for greater transparency and accessibility in local government, proposed initiatives including an Ethics Committee and Financial Stability Committee, created a Complete Count Committee for the 2020 Census, and worked with state representatives to secure funding for City parks, the City Market, municipal departments, and local business districts.
Tylec took office as Mayor in January 2022 and was reelected to a second four-year term in November 2025. His administration has focused on strengthening City finances, modernizing municipal operations, investing in neighborhoods and infrastructure, improving public services, and aggressively pursuing outside funding to reduce the burden on local taxpayers.
During his tenure, North Tonawanda has secured tens of millions of dollars in state and federal funding for public, private, and nonprofit projects throughout the community. Major initiatives have included the fully funded reconstruction of the Payne Park aquatic facility, continued investment in the City Market and downtown business districts, expanded housing and home repair programs, improvements to roads, parks, public safety, and municipal facilities, and modernization of the City’s water and sewer systems.
The administration has also worked to improve financial oversight, modernize City operations, support new and existing businesses, strengthen residential neighborhoods, and position North Tonawanda for continued economic and community growth.
Mayor Tylec continues to emphasize collaboration between City departments, elected officials, community organizations, businesses, and residents while making local government more accessible and responsive.
“North Tonawanda has tremendous potential, and I am proud of the progress we continue to make as a community. My goal is to make responsible investments in our neighborhoods, infrastructure, businesses, and quality of life while protecting taxpayers and planning for the future. It is an honor to serve the residents of the city I have always called home.”
